Helpful Tips for writing your child:

July 1st, 2011

Your child will write to you at least twice a year. A teacher or person on staff will help the children who have yet to learn how to read and write. English is a second language for many of the children, which may necessitate your Child’s letter to be translated by a teacher or other staff member. Due to the translation process, the Child’s thoughts may be conveyed in a more mature fashion. The children have also been instructed by Oasis staff to write to you as “Sister”, “Brother”, “Mother” or “Father” as a term of endearment.

We encourage you to send your sponsored child a personal or family photograph and a short letter of introduction. Oasis staff will translate your letter (when needed) and deliver it to your sponsored child. You may write to your sponsored child as often as you like. Your words of encouragement will make a big difference to your child. You will probably discover that your sponsored child is consistently praying for you.

All letters should be sent to Reaching International for distribution. If you are able to travel to India, we would be happy to try and arrange for you to meet your child and tour the Oasis Children’s Home.

Can I send Pictures?

Yes! Sponsored children typically keep their sponsors’ photos and letters as treasured possessions. You may even want to include a postcard from the area you live in.

Is there anything I can not send to my sponsored child?

We do ask that you provide comments and materials consistent with Christian values and philosophies. We will not send any pictures or letters that might be considered culturally inappropriate.

What topics are best to avoid?

  • Personal Contact Information: Your personal information should not be shared with your child.
  • Personal possessions: Since what they have is minimal, discussing the size of your home, cars and finances is not helpful and tends to emphasize the items your child does not have.
  • Dating relationships: This is not always culturally acceptable especially in India where many of the marriages are arranged.
  • Gifts: Gifts should not be sent to your child. The staff of Oasis provides gifts at the appropriate times of the year.

 Here are some suggested topics:

  • Describe your family
  • Discuss your favorite sports or pastimes
  • Describe your church, school or place of employment
  • Provide a general description of the town, state, or region in which you live
  • Encourage your sponsored child in any accomplishments, School, goals or areas of interest
  • Talk about your relationship with Jesus Christ
